Virgin Mary is relatively new to Hawaii's local music scene having formed just a couple of years ago, but it members are scene veterans and the band has been gaining momentum with their catchy songs and quality sound. Virgin Mary is fronted by Marc Holyoak with an all girl backing band, which includes Daphne Morlan on Bass, Brit Haynes on Guitar, Keili Trehan on Keys and Mandy Llamedo on drums.
Virgin Mary's rising popularity in Honolulu has earned them some of the highest accolades a local musician can receive, including airplay, sponsorships, a spot on The Highway to Hempfest Compilation along-side national artists including Slightly Stoopid, and even a mention in Conde Naste Traveler Magazine. They have played opening slots on big stages for national acts such as Owl City, The Posies,
Everclear and The Toasters. They have also already played at Hawaii's most respected venues including a New Years Eve Show where they played to thousands of revelers at Aloha Tower Marketplace, which has been repeatedly featured in episodes of Hawaii 5-0.
Holyoak, the band's lead singer describes their style of music as mix of The
Beatles meets Weezer. Their debut album, Ecstasy, released in 2011, sold out of Best Buy stores in Honolulu and Hollywood and the band just released their first music video for the single "Black Pearls" officially on VEVO. "The inspiration behind
Black Pearls was the result of a sponsorship deal. A company that dives for
Black Pearls in Tahiti and sells them here in Hawaii, offered us a sponsorship deal if we wrote a song about
Black Pearls," explained Holyoak. The music video features the band wearing thousands of dollars of real Tahitian black pearls.
With a successful debut album and single, a sponsorship deal, radio play and opening slots for nation acts already under their belts, the young band plans to pursue 2013 with even bigger goals. "We are ready to record our second album and are preparing for a multi-national tour in 2013, including possible stops in The Phillippines, Japan and the United States. We are especially pushing for exposure in Singapore, Japan and The Phillipines, as we have contacts in all three of those countries," explains Holyoak.
