This legendary performance, Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony, shows Ray's lifelong commitment to defining a genre of a whole new kind. Ray Charles gives a stellar performance of his greatest hits such as 'What'd I Say, 'I Can't Stop Loving You,' 'I Can See Clearly Now' and 'Oh, What A Beautiful Morning,' to name a few, and once again captivates and inspires his audience. His gift of music fuses blues, rock, soul, jazz, country and pop, and by mixing these together, he creates a highly one-of-a-kind and original sound that nobody could resist. With over 50 years in the business, Ray Charles shows at this concert why he has won numerous awards, including 12 Grammy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ray Charles was born into a poor African American family in Greenville, Florida. He developed glaucoma at an early age and went blind by the time he was seven years old. With the support of his mother and his passion for music, Charles was able to find a new sound of his own, which revolutionized popular music of the time. At age 15, he formed a nightclub jazz trio and eventually began composing, writing and arranging his own music. Moving around from R&B hits like 'Confession Blues' and 'A Fool For You' to country favorites like 'Hit the Road Jack' and 'Busted' to TV themes, pop, blues, and many more genres, it's no wonder why Charles was nicknamed 'The Genius.'
With over 10 CDs released and 11 songs making it to the top 10 charts, Charles has accumulated numerous awards such as the Governor's Performing Arts Award (1995), the Helen Keller Personal Achievement Award (1994), the National Medal of Arts (1993), the Florida Artists Hall of Fame (1992) and the NAACP's Image Awards (1983), among many others.
