CLIFTON, VA. (WAMPUS MULTIMEDIA/ www.markdoyon.com) - Singer-songwriter Mark Doyon, founder of the Virginia-based music collective Arms of Kismet (www.armsofkismet.com), is making his song catalog available online through Wampus Multimedia. The collection of 95 compositions written and released since 1987 includes selections from the soon-to-be released Arms of Kismet CD, "Cutting Room Rug," as well as links to digital audio.

"The way people experience music is changing," Doyon said. "People don't browse in record shops much anymore. They're tired of CDs piling up around the house. As a songwriter, I want to reach as many of those people as I can, and I don't want a physical product separating us. As Jeff Tweedy says, 'music isn't a loaf of bread.' It can't be consumed. There aren't limits to it. Putting the catalog online allows me to reach people without manufacturing and material costs. It's simple and direct."

Doyon expects independent music distribution to become primarily download-based within several years. "Before the phonograph," he said, "music was not tied to a physical medium other than sheet music. The music itself was separate from any medium. With digital downloading, we're seeing the return of music as separate from manufacturing. We're seeing the freeing of art from physical media."
