Placido Domingo Shares The Romance Of The Mediterranean On His New Album 'Encanto Del Mar'
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Sony Classical is delighted to announce a brand-new album from one of the world's best loved singers, the incomparable Placido Domingo. Available October 14, Encanto del Mar is a delightful collection of Mediterranean songs presenting Placido Domingo as we've never heard him before.
Imagine you're on the coast of Spain and the greatest singer in the world is performing just for you. Supported by a small group of musicians on Spanish guitar, bandoneon, clarinet, saxophone, violin, cello, bass, harp and percussion, Placido Domingo effortlessly melds music from several cultures, including North African rhythms, Iberian harmonies and Italian melodic lines. In his inimitable way, Placido Domingo creates an intimate and romantic atmosphere infused with pure joy.
Of course, it is all a world away from the power and drama of the operatic stage which was the setting for his recent acclaimed album of Verdi baritone arias. Instead, we find him here revelling in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and the peace of its coastline and countryside whilst drawing on music from a rich and varied tradition including folk and popular songs. The album was recorded right by the Mediterranean, in Valencia, Spain.
Encanto del Mar is a wonderful showcase for Placido Domingo's famous musical versatility and his legendary attention to detail and every nuance of the vocal line. He worked on the album alongside celebrated producer Robert Sadin (Sting/Kathleen Battle/Herbie Hancock) and together they created this invigorating brew of songs from Italy, Spain, France, Sardinia, Corsica, Israel and Cyprus. Tracks include: Mediterraneo (Spanish); Estate (Italian); En Mediterranee (French); Aranjuez (Spanish); Anghjulina (Corsican); Del Cabello Mas Sutil (Spanish); Adio Kerida (Ladino); Non Potho Reposare (Sardinian); Layla, layla (Hebrew); Torna a Surriento (Neapolitan); Reginella (Neapolitan); To Yasemi (Greek-Cypriot); Plaisir d'Amour (French).
Placido Domingo is a world-renowned, multifaceted artist. Recognized as one of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera, he is also a conductor and a major force as an opera administrator in his role as General Director of Los Angeles Opera.
He has been at home on the world's stages for over half a century, with over 800 performances at the Metropolitan Opera alone. He has sung over 145 roles, both as tenor and baritone, with more than 3500 career performances and more than 100 recordings of complete operas, compilations of arias and duets and crossover discs. His work in the recording studio has earned him 12 Grammy Awards, three of which are Latin Grammys, and he has made more than 50 music videos. His appearances around the world with his colleagues Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti in the now legendary 'The Three Tenors' concerts are one of the great musical success stories of the 1990s.
Placido Domingo has conducted more than 500 opera performances and symphonic concerts with the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper, LA Opera, Chicago Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, National Symphony, London Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic, among others.
By the end of 2014, Placido Domingo will have celebrated the 47th anniversary of his Vienna State Opera debut, his 46th anniversary at the Metropolitan Opera and his 45th at La Scala. He is founder of the international vocal competition Operalia, which returned to Los Angeles this August.
