New York, NY (Top40 Charts) LA-based
Cleopatra Records releases the self-titled debut album by New York's
Black Plastic on Friday, April 15. One of Cleopatra's newest signees,
Black Plastic is the musical project of visual artist
Kevin Grady, with production by artist/producer Andr Obin, whose track "The Arsonist" was featured on Cleopatras recent "Occult Box" compilation.
Dark, moody and mostly electronic,
Black Plastic give a modern, danceable twist to the dark wave genre. "It's club music for vampires," says Grady. "In spirit it has a connection to DIY synthpop and punk, in that I don't consider myself a musician as such. I'm an art director, and this is an art-directed album. It's not real. That's why I called it
Black Plastic."
Grady is perhaps best known as the founder of Lemon, an award-winning pop art magazine with a broad cult following. Lavishly produced and designed, the magazine has hosted a range of impressive contributors, including
David Bowie, Daft Punk, Jeff Koons,
Sonic Youth and many others.
Black Plastic's first music video, for the song "Deutsch", was premiered on Post-Punk.com on April 14, on the eve of the debut album's release. It was made by
David Strindberg, a Swedish director known for his work for brands like H&M and Adidas and musicians like Madonna. The video was also featured on the front page of the video-sharing site Daily Motion.
Black Plastic will kick off live shows at Boston's Great Scott on April 25, and will play showcases in NY and LA later this spring and early summer.
