Francoise Muteteli | Survivor of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda
Francoise Muteteli was born in Nyanza, Rwanda in 1969, to Athanase Munyangango (father), a teacher, and Rose Mugorewera (mother), a nurse. Growing up, Francoise was taunted at school by her Hutu classmates. Just before the genocide began in 1994, Francoise lived with her parents and sister while teaching fourth grade at Kavumu primary school. On April 22, the family home was attacked by genocidaires and her entire family, including an aunt and a cousin who had fled violence in Kigali, were murdered. Although hit by a bullet, Francoise survived the attack and fled. She was hidden by an old Hutu woman until the end of the genocide in July 1994. She was interviewed on April 22, 2011, in Kigali, Rwanda.
