Rae Sremmurd is an American hip hop duo, composed of two brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy from Tupelo, Mississippi. They are perhaps best known for their single "No Type", which charted at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Similarly, their song "No Flex Zone" peaked at number 36 on the Hot 100 in November 2014. They are based in Atlanta, Georgia. Their debut album SremmLife was released in 2015. "Rae Sremmurd" is their home label, EarDrummers spelled backwards.
Khalif Brown and Aaquil Brown were born in Whittier, California, but moved to Tupelo, Mississippi at an early age. And according to an interview by Complex, at a point in their life they were homeless. In 2014, the duo of brothers Khalif "Swae Lee" Brown and Aaquil "Slim Jimmy" Brown were riding high off the success of the Mike WiLL Made-It-produced track, and the few remixes thanks to Nicki Minaj and Pusha T, and other hit singles "No Type," "Up Like Trump," and "Throw Sum Mo" (featuring Nicki Minaj & Young Thug).
Before they became Rae Sremmurd, they were in a trio called "Dem Outta St8 Boyz" which uploaded videos and songs to social media like YouTube and Reverbnation, looking for recognition. They were first noticed by P-Nasty, whose cousin told him about them. P-Nasty called them and told them he was interested in their music, and that they should make more music and get a video ready. Swae Lee said, according to an article from Vice:
P-Nasty had called us, he was like yo, drop what ya'll doing we're about to start doing this music real heavy. Drop what ya'll doing and come to Atlanta.
After months of recording and practicing, they went to Atlanta to produce their first song with Marz Of The Eardrummers called "I Dip", and later produced a second song called "We". Neither of them received much attention.
Rae Sremmurd signed with Ear Drummers Entertainment on January 1, 2014.
On May 15, 2014, Rae Sremmurd released their single "No Flex Zone," which gained media attention after an official remix was done by Nicki Minaj and Pusha T. The single later became popular in the US Charts, climbing to #36 on Billboard Hot 100. On September 17, 2014 they released their second single entitled "No Type" which rose to #16 on Billboard Hot 100.
