Biography
Myrella Nascimento was born on August 19, 1983 in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Her name already suggested her future - that destiny was preparing something musical for her. After all, "Mi", "Re" and "La" are the musical notes forming the chord "Mi sus" making up her name. Another sign was that she is the daughter of a Pernambucano (from Pernambuco, Northeast of Brasil), and a Paranaense (Paraná, Southeast of Brazil), providing the link of the North - percussion and multi-rhythm - and South with the European influence in that part of the country of the great composers.
She then grew up in São Paulo, which historically became multi-cultural, a megalopolis of intense artistic production flowing from all sides.
Myrella could have followed a different career altogether, in publicity for example, because she graduated in advertising. But she did not follow that route. This paulistana always had contact with music since her childhood. She began her musical studies at the age of nine, with a keyboard. Then she moved on to the guitar and for a while studied percussion at ULM ( Universidade Livre de Música), where she also had the opportunity to take classes in composition and arrangement with the renowned Brazilian musician and composer Eduardo Gudin.
During her childhood, Myrella also had contact with a culture of intense and specific sounds which would influence her later - the Moorish culture. The connection came through belly-dancing, which she began at 11 years old and continued to 18. Such influence, mainly by the instruments used in their songs, added an important dimension to her compositions. This connection inevitably took Myrella to Spain, with its long history of Moorish influence, a country she visited in 2005. She spent some time in Barcelona, learning the language, and further strengthening the ties with that culture. Experiencing the Latin/Iberian music, also added another significant facet to her compositions.
Myrella wrote her first song at the age of 12, in the rhythm of bossa nova and with lyrics about a platonic love, which she called "É preciso te conquistar" (I need to conquer you). From thereon, there was no stopping her and at that early stage in her life she knew she wanted to become a musician.
In 2010 she recorded her first album, "Tempoética", independently and on a tight budget, which was launched on the network of Saraiva bookshops, a well known cultural distribution channel. This was important in the process of Myrella's self-discovery as a composer.
In 2012, still independent, the she recorded the album "Faces", with the music production by Kadu Fernandes. "Faces" contains some re-releases and new arrangements of songs included in "Tempoética", but also new songs plus the adaptation of the well-known song by the celebrated composer from Bahia, Dorival Caymmi -"Marina", with a different arrangement from the original written by Myrella. This project shows the more mature side of Myrella. With the financial support of a private investor, ‘Faces' reached an international market. The participation of great musicians, who have already become well known in the Brazilian market, also contributed further to this project, such as Albino Infantozzi on drums, Pedro Ivo on bass, Michel Skava on piano, Mário Testoni on the hammond organ; Gustavo Martins, accoustic and electric guitars and Kadu Fernandes on percussion. Plus the participation of Eduardo Gudin on the song "Desabafo", a song she composed when she was still a student in 2003, and came to life nine years later.
The album "Faces" was finished in the USA in February 2013. The mixing was by mixing engineer Gustavo Celis, in the Studio Elastic, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Celis has won eight grammys, among them, one for mixing the album "Oral Fixation" by Shakira, in 2006. He was also responsible for the mixing of the song "Waka Waka" also by Shakira for the theme for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. To add more weight to "Faces", the mastering engineer was Stephen Marcussen, owner of one of the most famous studios in Hollywood. Since its opening, Marcussen was acclaimed for his expert knowledge of all current audio formats. His mastering credits also include artists such as Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, BB King, The Pretenders, Smashing Pumpkins and the Rolling Stones, among many others. This work represents the versatility on Myrella's compositions and interpretation. Being rich in rhythm, lyrics and harmony, performed in samba, baião, pop, funk, plus two songs in Spanish: "Se fue" with a flamenco footprint, and "Un amor te regalé" a romantic ballad. This is only her second project, resulting from a cultural mix showing Myrella Nascimento as an artist, translated into chords, singing, compositions and musical arrangements.
