Varese Sarabande Records To Release 'The Equalizer' Soundtrack
LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ CineMedia) Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE EQUALIZER - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD September 23, 2014. The soundtrack features the original score composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. THE EQUALIZER opens in theaters on September 26, 2014.

"Because the director Antoine Fuqua, wanted the action to be believable, the score had to be rooted in reality," explained Gregson-Williams. "We couldn't have French horns announcing this character as if he were some super hero. Consequently, there's quite a dark tinge to his theme, and I learned quite early on that to bring real darkness to any given scene, it's necessary to have a little ray of light somewhere in order to contrast the colors. I took a two-pronged attack with the protagonist's music - one avenue followed his action, which was bold, strong, and noisy, while the other was quite sensitive and introspective."

As one of Hollywood's most sought after composers, Harry Gregson-Williams' scores span the spectrum of high-profile projects from action and drama to animation and documentary - each infused with the emotional punch and atmospheric intensity that mark his distinctive style. He garnered a BAFTA nomination for the score for the first SHREK; worked on all four installments of the blockbuster Shrek franchise; and received Golden Globe and Grammy Award nominations for his score for Andrew Adamson's THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE.

Gregson-Williams work was most recently heard in Fox Searchlight's thriller THE EAST, TOTAL RECALL, the animated film ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, the action thriller COWBOYS & ALIENS, the documentary LIFE IN A DAY and the theme for PROMETHEUS. Gregson-Williams also scored the critically acclaimed THE TOWN, marking his second collaboration with director Ben Affleck having first worked with Affleck as the composer on the Oscar®-nominated GONE BABY GONE. THE EQUALIZER marks his second collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua having previously worked together on THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS.

Gregson-Williams has had the distinction of receiving the Hollywood Composer of the Year Award from the Hollywood Film Festival, as well as the Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement from the BMI organization's Film/Television Music Awards.

In THE EQUALIZER, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him to lead a quiet life in peace. But when McCall meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can't stand idly by - he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is THE EQUALIZER. Starring Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, with Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. Directed by Antoine Fuqua. Written by Richard Wenk. Based on the television series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.

For the theme of Teddy, the film's central protagonist, Gregson-Williams took an unusual approach. "He maybe the bad guy, but I looked at his character and he's wearing these beautiful, expensive suits - he's the best-dressed guy in the movie and he arrives on a private jet - so clearly his thematic material could afford to reflect these rather refined characteristics. It's only as you discover more about him that you realize he is a really nasty piece of work."

Columbia Pictures in association with Star Capital and Village Roadshow Pictures an Escape Artists / Zhiv / Mace Neufeld production presents THE EQUALIZER, in theaters nationwide on September 26, 2014. THE EQUALIZER - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally and on CD September 23, 2014.

Other soundtracks composed by Harry Gregson-Williams that are available from Varèse Sarabande include SHREK 2, SHREK THE THIRD, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, COWBOYS & ALIENS, MAN ON FIRE, PASSIONADA, THE RUNDOWN, and X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.
