Papa Roach are making like their namesake, infesting the Billboard rock charts with the title track from their fourth album, Getting Away With Murder. So what's next for the California quartet? They're about to release a new single and hit the road on a U.S. tour.
In a move that might surprise some of their diehard fans, the Roaches are readying the power ballad "
Scars" as their second single. It's a big, sweeping mixture of guitars and honesty, as Jerry Horton crunches out chords and frontman Jacoby Shaddix sings about his struggles with sobriety.
"Some of our fans hear that song and say, 'I had to give it a few listens, dude. But I love it,' " Shaddix said. "It's a P-Roach anthem. It has heart. It's just undeniable. It stems from a good night in
Vegas turned bad. I ended up in the hospital with 11 staples in my head, self-mutilation. It was just a really bad night. It's about trying to help someone who really doesn't want you to help them.
"Through music, I'm always trying to make sense of the confusion in my life," he continued. "Whatever life throws at you, music is there for me, through the hard times and the good times. It's been something for me to confide in, because when you get right down to it, I'm not really good at confiding in people."
Shaddix will have a chance to work on his people skills when
Papa Roach hit the road for a proper U.S. tour, their first after months of playing small clubs, in-store performances and the radio-show circuit.
"We're really excited about touring on this record. Writing the new songs in the studio and never playing them live before, when we do play them live, and the kids are singing along, that's the payoff," Shaddix said. "We're like, 'Damn, we've got some rock anthems on our hands!' We started out playing in these small, smoky, sweaty clubs, and now we're going to step it up to the theater-size [venues]. We're just going to step it up and build on all this."
