New York, NY (Top40 Charts) New Orleans-based quartet The Breton Sound officially announce their fall 2014 tour schedule, which includes a special performance at the House of Blues on Thursday, November 13, as the opening, NOLA-spotlight rock band for Grammy Award-winning Irvin Mayfield and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
"We're completely honored that we were hand chosen by Irvin Mayfield and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra to represent the New Orleans rock scene at their special House of Blues jazz tribute performance," said lead singer and guitarist Jonathan Pretus. "The evening will pay homage to rock legends Led Zeppelin, Queen, and
Nirvana through jazz, with The Breton Sound bringing a little bit of Southern rock n' roll."
The Breton Sound has been taking the NOLA scene by force with their energetic, melodic, and anthemic rock and roll. The band was founded by Pretus (formerly of Cowboy Mouth) and longtime friend and collaborator, lead guitarist Stephen Turner. This fruitful early period produced an ambitious EP, Eudaemonia, which covered a wide range of influences, combining Pretus' Beatlesesque pop sensibility with Turner's Rush-infused guitar work. Over the course of the next year, the two would perform and tour in support of Eudaemonia, aided by a cast of friends filling in on bass and drums.
Musically they have varied influences, from
Weezer to Van Halen, The Descendants to Dredg,
Oasis to Foo Fighters; however, The Breton Sound's sound has grown into a focused brand of rock that is just as musically impressive as it is restrained. This is most apparent on their blistering EP, MAPS. This set finds The Breton Sound reunited with producer Tom Drummond of Better than Ezra, who also produced Eudaemonia. Recorded at Fudge Studios in New Orleans with Drummond at the helm, The Breton Sound created their strongest set yet, songs that are definitive, the tone of a band that knows exactly who they are. PASTE Magazine hailed them as one of "12 Louisiana Bands You Should Listen To."
In the fall of 2013, The Breton Sound welcomed drummer John Bourgeois, a former member of bands Fatter Than Albert and Dead Legends, to the band, an addition that has elevated their performances and writing to new heights.
In early 2014, Joe Bourgeois (John's twin brother), formerly of MyNameIsJohnMichael, joined the band on bass, creating a rhythm section that locks in on a whole other level. It was perfect timing, as the band were asked to appear for the first time at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Milwaukee's Summerfest, the Voodoo
Music Experience.
The band is currently recording their new album, Don't Be Afraid of Rock and Roll. With Drummond producing again, the band have been traveling around the South, recording songs in famed studios such as Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Zac Brown's Southern Ground in Atlanta, Georgia, and The
Music Shed in New Orleans, Louisiana. The album will be released over two separate EP's, followed by a vinyl-only full-length release.
