New York, NY (Top40 Charts) "It's a really bold and different kind of score," said Leonard-Morgan. "EA had heard Dredd, amongst some of my other works, and loved it. Combined with my past producing and working with bands, I really tried to do something quite different with the score, so I took it down a total band route, along with various analog synths."
Leonard-Morgan made sure to integrate his original composition with the songs used in the game. He described, "We spent ages working out playlists for the licensed music. The audio team at EA and I would send tracks back and forth between us, putting together huge Spotify playlists, to create the collection of songs for BATTLEFIELD. Obviously my score needed to fit in with these songs to create a cohesive experience for the player."
As for his original music, "I sampled up a load of gunfire from the game and created loops with it, so that subliminally, there's some drum loops which have the same sounds as people playing the game shooting each other," Leonard-Morgan described. "I also made a 'prepared piano' in the studio for the scene where there's a shootout amongst drug dealers in a weed factory. I wanted to make it really trippy. It ended up with me just hitting anything and everything in the studio, including an ancient metal sword which was lying around, and manipulated the audio to add delay to it. There's even a few sleep-deprived maniacal laughs in there to add to the hallucinogenic vibe."
ABOUT PAUL LEONARD-MORGAN
Paul Leonard-Morgan is a BAFTA award winning and Ivor Novello nominated composer and producer. His unique cinematic style (fusing orchestra with electronica) has put him in high demand, both as a producer for bands and as a soundtrack composer. Studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of
Music and Drama, he quickly developed a reputation as a producer and arranger on the thriving Glasgow music scene, working with bands such as Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol,
Mogwai and Texas. In addition, he has become long-term collaborator of Scottish songstress Isobel Campbell, working extensively on each of her albums, including the Mercury nominated "Ballad Of The Broken Seas" with Mark Lanegan.
Leonard-Morgan's first film score, Pineapple, earned a BAFTA award, and his first television drama in the UK, Fallen, earned him both BAFTA and Ivor Novello nominations. This led to him scoring 50 episodes of the hit BBC/Kudos drama
Spooks (called MI5 in the USA). His groundbreaking score for the #1 box office hit Limitless, a paranoia-fuelled action thriller, was nominated for the prestigious World
Soundtrack Discovery Award in Ghent.
It would be DREDD that would earn Leonard-Morgan recognition as a composer defining the new generation of hybrid scores. Variety magazine noted "the throbbing sounds of Paul Leonard-Morgan's bass-heavy original score." His credits also include three Minions films (released alongside Despicable Me 2), Walking With Dinosaurs 3D, The Numbers Station, and Legendary. BATTLEFIELD™ HARDLINE marks Leonard-Morgan's first foray into video games.
