Prince Edward Island, The Mavericks will keep music fans happy "all night long" throughout the summer months. Their Mono Mundo Tour will take the Grammy-winning band to 32 cities in 15 states and four provinces. Frontman Raul Malo says that the band is excited to hit the road: "We're playing some beautiful venues that should make for some special nights. Also, the [fans] have already had the record for a little bit, so they'll be ready for some new music." Besides headlining shows from coast-to-coast, The Mavericks will also appear at festivals like the Old Settler's
Music Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the Doheny Blues Festival and the Clearwater Festival.
The dynamic group will perform "Summertime (When I'm With You)" on Conan tonight (3/25), airing on TBS at 11 p.m. ET/10 p.m. CT. Check local listings.
The Mavericks kicked off their Mono Mundo Tour with a triumphant swing through Europe, where they performed in the U.K., France, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The talented foursome (Malo, guitarist Eddie Perez, keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden and drummer Paul Deakin) and their "Fantastic Four" backing musicians had a great time with these European shows. "Getting to play Paris for the first time was very special to us," states Deakin. "The fans in the Netherlands, Germany and Copenhagen greeted us like returning heroes. It was a beautiful experience." In fact, The Mavericks will be making a quick trip back to
Europe in June to play the Trucker and Country Festival in Interlaken, Switzerland.
"Country's coolest, most versatile band," according to Rolling Stone Country, is running on high gear off of the success of their latest album, Mono, which was released February 27 on The Valory
Music Co. Since The Mavericks reunion following a near decade-long hiatus, Mono has drawn raves from reviewers. Jewly Hight, in Billboard, proclaimed, "it's big, bold and still stands out next to anything coming from Nashville," while Vintage Guitar's Rich Kienzle declared that "they've caught lightning in a bottle yet again."
According to Randy Lewis in the Los Angeles Times, "What made The Mavericks' 25th anniversary tour stop…impressive was that the heart and soul of the richly vibrant 2 1/2-hour show wasn't vintage songs from the group's first go-round in the 1980s and '90s but the sterling material from its latest album." The Fort Worth Star Telegram's Preston Jones observed: "A gleeful, unbridled scene was tantamount to anarchy at a venue that, broadly speaking, is usually pretty buttoned up. But then, such is the power of the Mavericks, a portable party if ever a band could be described thusly. Given the band's slippery sonic tendencies — everything from neo-traditional country to Latin rock is stirred into its songs — it's as succinct a description as you're ever likely to find."
From the lively opening number "
All Night Long" to the Doug Sahm cover "Nitty Gritty" that closes the disc, Mono exudes a festive vibe that should keep people dancing all concert long. The album showcases the Mavericks' unique blend of country, rock, Latin, soul, jazz, Tex-Mex and other roots styles, which results in a marvelous "mono mundo" (one world) of music that transcends decades. It's a sound that Holly Gleason, writing in Paste, heralded as "a new world for post-country country."
