New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Indie pop duo Pelicans and Their Allies, based out of Atlanta and Washington DC, announces the release of their self-titled EP due out Nov 6. Every song on the Pelicans and Their Allies EP incorporates playful themes, while sporting smart, quirky indie pop sounds, and references to King Kong, Mark Twain, and other pop culture icons.
The EP was recorded at Blanket Fort Studio, in Robert Higgs' own apartment, allowing for unlimited experimentation in a familiar environment. The band took full advantage of this creative freedom to craft a work that sports a wide spectrum of sounds. Pelicans and Their Allies have an arsenal of musical instruments at their disposal thanks to Dayana Yochim, who often combs through thrift stores in search of new sounds like melodicas, toy organs and keyboards. Powerful drums and vocal hooks dominate songs such as the EP's debut single, "Just Like July," while subtle melodic harmonies and gentle percussion fill the air in others, such as "I Guess You Already Knew That." The band created Backseat Songwriter to allow fans to suggest song ideas, which resulted in" Sam vs The Ape," a song about Sam
Clemens struggling with his alter ego Mark Twain, with a little King Kong thrown in.
It's not just about the sounds though: this EP also includes references to literature, alluding to the book Lonesome Dove through the song "Just Like July." One of the book's main character, July Johnson, is reluctant to start his journey, yet is forced to do so. "When I play the song it feels like I am reminding myself to not take the easy route if I know the hard route is better," Higgs says. The song reinforces this theme by opening with the declaration, "stop your running / build a fort where you're standing / and defend it with all that you've got."
