Omnivore Recordings has two dogs in the Record Store Day's Black Friday race: Big Star's Jesus Christ EP (featuring never-before-released material) and Neil Finn & Paul Kelly's' Goin' Your Way (Highlights). Both are available on vinyl only, with supplies limited.
Originally recorded for Big Star's iconic Third, "Jesus Christ" has become a holiday staple. What better way to celebrate this time of year than to experience this classic track on vinyl — along with the gift of previously unissued material.
The very collectible 10" EP includes the Three Wise Men artwork from a 1973 Big Star promo poster, comes pressed on translucent blue vinyl, and contains a download card. In addition to the original album version of its namesake, the audio program features a demo of "Jesus Christ" that first appeared on the Grammy Award-winning box set, Keep an Eye on the Sky, as well as five previously unissued tracks.
Fans have been clamoring for an official release of "Another Time Another Place & You" for decades, and it makes is first ever appearance here, along with a TV mix of Third's "Thank You Friends." Two more unissued Chris Bell instrumentals join them. An unheard demo of "Big Black Car" (the studio version also appears on Third) provides a preview of the forthcoming box set Complete Third (coming 2016).
The legacy of Big Star continues to shine, and the Jesus Christ EP will add some true B-sides to fans' collections that otherwise would have fallen through the cracks. It will provide them with not only what they've been searching for, but make them rejoice in what they've found.
Two of Australia and New Zealand's best-selling and most revered singer-songwriters, Neil Finn and Paul Kelly, toured together in 2013. Their performance at the Sydney Opera House was recorded and released there as Goin' Your Way later that year to acclaim, reaching the Top 5 on the charts and being certified Gold. Unfortunately, it was only available as a high-priced import outside of Australia and New Zealand.
Omnivore Recordings will share this incredible document with the rest of the world on December 11, 2015 in a 2-CD package and digitally.
In advance of the full-length set, a 10-song LP version of some of the show's highlights will be released for Record Store Day Black Friday, on Nov. 27. Goin' Your Way (Highlights), pressed on translucent yellow vinyl, features staples like Kelly's "To Her Door" and "Before Too Long" and Finn's "She Will Have Her Way." The duo also dips back into the canon of hits from Finn's previous bands and collaborations — "Won't Give In" from the Finn Brothers, "Four Seasons in One Day" and "Don't Dream It's Over" from Crowded House, among others.
Goin' Your Way contains more than 30 years of classic songs, performed live with a full band — including Kelly's nephew, Dan Kelly, on guitar; Finn's son, Elroy Finn, on drums; and Zoe Hauptmann on bass — to an adoring crowd. Those in attendance knew it was special. Now, it's the world's turn to experience the magic of Neil Finn, Paul Kelly and Goin' Your Way!
