Los Angeles, CA (Top40 Charts) Lakeshore Records will release BURNT- Original Motion Picture
Soundtrack digitally on November 13, with a deluxe version being released digitally on December 4 and on CD December 18, 2015. The album features the film's original score by Rob Simonsen (THE AGE OF ADALINE, FOXCATCHER) and tracks by Barnes Courtney, Autograf, RY X, The
Avener & John Lee Hooker, plus the original track "Ode to a Sous Vide" performed by the film's Bradley Cooper. The deluxe version contains one additional song, "
Flashlight" by Bonobo.
"We wanted something elegant, but with movement," said composer Simonsen. "A small chamber orchestra seemed to fit the bill, along with looped and treated sounds and electronics." Simonsen wanted to cover a few bases in the score: "Emotional moments for budding romance or moments of tenderness, which is more about Adam softening, moments of tension where things were in jeopardy, and moments of the act of cooking/creating/celebrating."
BURNT is about a chef, Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper), who had it all - and lost it. The former enfant terrible of the Paris restaurant scene had earned two Michelin stars and only ever cared about the thrill of creating explosions of taste. To land his own kitchen and that third elusive star though, Jones will need to leave his bad habits behind and get the best of the best on his side, including the beautiful Helene (Sienna Miller). BURNT is a remarkably funny and emotional story about the love of food, the love between two people, and the power of second chances.
There were many scenes that were key to the film, but Simonsen felt the first time we saw Adam in the kitchen marked the tone for the film. "The first time we see Adam in the kitchen and cooks for Simone. That's a bit of a celebration of Adam's return to what he felt he was born to do and we had to get the right amount of intensity vs art." Simonsen went on further to note "we see this guy with a tough, raucous exterior crafting something very delicate and beautiful. We needed to hit that tone just right."
With a keen instinct for storytelling, Simonsen has established himself amongst a new wave of composers making a significant impact in the film industry. Under the mentorship of Mychael Danna, Simonsen apprenticed alongside one of the most respected film composers from the last two decades. In addition to co-scoring films like the Fox Searchlight hit (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, Rob provided additional music for films including MONEYBALL and LIFE OF PI, the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2013.
Working independently, Simonsen garnered two 2013 World
Soundtrack Academy Award Nominations for the Sundance hits THE SPECTACULAR NOW and THE WAY, WAY BACK. The same year, he scored the global ad launch for Apple's iPhone 5 and provided the iconic piano music for their Everyday campaign. His momentum continued in 2014, completing work on Zach Braff's second feature, WISH I WAS HERE, and
Bennett Miller's multiple Oscar nominee FOXCATCHER.
Simonsen is a co-founder of The Echo Society, a composer collective presenting an ongoing concert series in Los Angeles, providing composers, musicians and artists a new and exciting platform to create and perform progressive musical works.
