New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Varèse Sarabande is proud to celebrate the nominations for two recent titles. On Monday December 7, WHIPLASH (original score by Justin Hurwitz) earned a Grammy nomination in the "Best Score
Soundtrack For Visual Media" category. Later in the week, CAROL (composed by Carter Burwell) earned a Golden
Globe nomination for "Best Original Score Motion Picture". Both soundtrack recordings were released by the label.
CAROL is earning numerous accolades for its composer, Carter Burwell. Now a two-time Golden
Globe nominee, Burwell is being recognized as a strong contender for an Academy Award® nomination by pundits from Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Goldderby, AwardsDaily, and the LA Times. He has a long-standing relationship with Varèse Sarabande, including the soundtrack releases for Burwell's RAISING ARIZONA, MILLER'S CROSSING, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, and MILDRED PIERCE.
"Carter Burwell has been one of film music's most distinctive voices for the last three decades," said Robert Townson, Head
Soundtrack Producer at Varèse Sarabande. "His very first score, (BLOOD SIMPLE, 1984) was release by Varèse Sarabande in 1987, coupled with Carter's score for the Coen brothers comedy RAISING ARIZONA. Carter truly has a sound all his own and has always been a little alternative. The recognition and acclaim he's been receiving for his latest score CAROL, is long overdue! It's hard to believe that Carter Burwell has never received an Academy Award™ nomination. With scores like FARGO, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, IN BRUGES, THE BLIND SIDE and TRUE GRIT behind him, I think the time has come."
The 2014 film WHIPLASH earned the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The accolades didn't stop there, with Entertainment Weekly calling it the #1 movie of the year and Indiewire naming it a Top 10 soundtrack. Varèse Sarabande released the soundtrack digitally, on CD and on multiple versions of LP. WHIPLASH had previously been nominated for a "Best Picture" Academy Award earlier this year.
Regarding WHIPLASH'S nomination for a Grammy, it's fantastic to witness how this small yet important film and its music continues to be recognized on the world stage "We at Varèse Sarabande are proud to continue to spotlight emerging composers like Justin Hurwitz. The nomination for his breakthrough film proves that there is still room for exciting new voices in film music," said Blumenthal.
The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on January 10, 2016. The Grammys will be awarded on February 15, 2016
