PRAISE FOR ESPERANZA SPALDING & 'EMILY'S D+EVOLUTION':
"She conjures the Seventies tag team of
Joni Mitchell and Jaco Pastorius in one person. There are modern echoes too: St. Vincent,
Solange Knowles, Radiohead. But Spalding is an original." - Rolling Stone, 4 stars
"Whimsy gets weaponized...a sustained burst of funk enlightenment that rings with echoes of childhood." - The New York Times
"An artistic statement album with a capital "A"...her most fascinating record yet." -- Los Angeles Times
"'Emily's D+Evolution' propels her music in a whole new direction...she's transformed her mellifluous signature into something raucous and occasionally discordant. Emily, it turns out, is a classic-rock star." - Vogue
"A wonderfully chaotic album that fits in line with her genre's current crossover moment while also feeling exceptionally grounded in '70s jazz-rock, prog, and funk." - Pitchfork
"A sharp departure from Spalding's previous self-presentation. There's more psychedelic rock, distortion, and experimentation...like her other work, it's glued together by her effortless charisma and virtuoso musicianship." - VICE Noisey
"The self-produced album is true to Spalding's freewheeling spirit, blending neo-soul influences with fierce funk-guitar licks and expansive jazz rhythms, while filtering the songs through 'a theatrical lens' that she says will take the experience to a whole other level when performed live." - Nylon
"Heady funk, tongue-twisting soul, sparsely arranged confessional...Spalding is discovering where her creative impulse can take her in real time." -
Boston Globe
