New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Unfiltered Hillbilly Swing trio The Urban Pioneers new album Feast or Famine to be released on May 13th. The new release will be available on CD and digitally with a vinyl album coming later this year. The Urban Pioneers lead vocalist, banjo and rhythm guitarist Jared Mcgovern, Fiddle player and vocalist Liz
Sloan and Upright Bassist,
Martin Sargent.
Feast or Famine takes you on a wild rollercoaster of emotions and sounds starting with an anxiety driven instrumental called Maybelles Farewell only to be followed with the sweet, sweeping melodic tones of Sunrise after Sunset to bring your blood pressure back to normalcy. Influenced by a wide variety of roots based legacies, The Urban Pioneers reached in all directions on this album to create a well rounded sound.
Also on the release He Didnt Know My Name Back Then expresses the frustration of being put down but never giving up which is the very essence of how The Urban Pioneers came about. If you prefer old time, listen to Fly Around or John Browns Dream and if that doesnt get your feet tapping head on over to Goliath where the Urban Pioneers twist a Biblical story into a dynamic storm of chaos. High On a Mountain introduces Lizs unpolished vocals that exemplifies the songs roots of Appalachian folk written by Olabelle Reed where as Never had a Waffle at the Waffle House is silly, fun and from the bands favorite perspective for writing as a truck driver on the road. As well, Behind the Wheel Again is an upbeat, bouncing tune meant for those daily hours driving down the freeway. Followed by Mary the Elephant which is a true story of a hanging in TN and features guest appearances by J.D. Wilkes on Harmonica and Abel Castillo on squeeze box.
Their diverse backgrounds in music bring to the table a plethora of sounds and feeling that in the end mesh together to possess a perfect blend of simplicity and fierceness. Spending their life on the road and playing music is the most important thing to this three-piece, success to them is not making it big but rather the story they can share with you at the end of the day. Jared and Liz are the core of the band often compared to Johnny and June, they know how to keep an audience captured with their on and off stage chemistry. There are no smoke and mirrors with this unit. They take pride in keeping their music fresh, raw and authentic.
