Introducing Getaway Dogs
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Getaway Dogs is the brainchild of songwriter Kai Killion, a Bay Area native who spent the first twelve years of his life in constant motion. The son of a Californian artist and a Brazilian immigrant, Killion was born in the States but spent his baby years in post-war Eritrea. His family returned to California, spending seven years in Santa Cruz, then moving up the coast to rural Point Reyes. They would eventually leave the US again, this time to spend a year living in Rio de Janeiro. It was during this year in Brazil, surrounded by a heavily musical family, that Killion came in touch with his Brazilian heritage and learned to play guitar. All the places he has lived and traveled have collectively imprinted in him a unique style of musicianship, lending natural roots to American rock, folk, soul, and Brazilian music.

Killion's first record, Mermaid Legs & Getaway Dogs, an acoustic solo project released in 2013, subsequently led to the formation of what is now Getaway Dogs, for which Killion recruited long time friend Samantha Stone to sing harmonies and occasional lead vocals. Though the rhythm section has rotated various times over the last two years, Stone remains a crucial component to the bands ethereal, soulful sound. Her presence is felt heavily on their debut record, Lost In The Ebb, projected to release in August 2016.

As an abstract exploration of identity, Lost In The Ebb finds dark, thoughtful lyricism in conjunction with a psychedelic fusion of surf rock, neo-soul, hip-hop, and Brazilian guitar. Telling personal stories through poetic lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and dreamlike vocal harmonies, the record captures the essence of coastal California. The songs carry their own independent energy yet function seamlessly within the album as a whole. It flows like the sea-- shifting, rising, and dropping-- leaving you in an altered state, elated, inspired, emotional. Killion and Stones personal influences of people, place, culture, and nature, as well as their own evolution as artists, is evident in this memento.
