New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Floating Points will unveil his debut film and soundtrack project today, 'Reflections - Mojave Desert,' as part of a global premiere event at London's Barbican Theatre. The DJ and producer conceived the short film while rehearsing for a U.S. tour in the California desert last year. 'Reflections' was directed by Anna Diaz Ortuño, a riveting exploration of the visual and sonic idiosyncrasies of the Mojave, captured through vignettes of Floating Points (née Sam Shepherd) and his live band performing five brand-new originals in the open air. In the film, Shepherd utilizes the Mojave as an instrument, making use of parabolic microphones and experimental recording techniques to capture the landscape's natural sonic properties. The project is the first in a planned series of environmental recordings by Floating Points, to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world.
Today's global premiere event will include an audience Q&A with Shepherd and Ortuño. Boiler Room will host a live stream of that Q&A on their YouTube channel, beginning at 3:45pm EST / 8:45pm BST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHrBu5Xg0HU.
A 24-hour loop of the film will go live on Boiler Room's YouTube channel at the same time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bblIAtjmoNo.
'Reflections - Mojave Desert' will officially be released tomorrow, June 30, through Luaka Bop in the U.S. The film and soundtrack will be available on all physical formats and DSPs at that time. Previously, Floating Points has released two advance sections of the film:
"Silurian Blue," which was described by NPR
Music as "a beautiful, psych-prog meditation": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_vtGMUzPnM
"Kelso Dunes," an invigorating five-piece jam under the endless expanses of a Mojave night sky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI-kmzaCQWc
The project has been met with early critical praise from both sides of the Atlantic, including a Wall Street Journal feature that ran yesterday.
"The very breath of the desert is made audible. The result is transportive and supremely psychedelic." - Pitchfork
"Crossing genres with ease, 'Reflections - Mojave Desert' doesn't fit neatly into any category and it's never less than absorbing." - Wall Street Journal
"Sprawling, atmospheric and at times haunting." - British GQ
"Inspired engagement, spooky surround-sound textures, galloping synths, freeform sprawls." - Uncut, 8 out of 10
"Stunning…a dramatic step forward." -
Clash Magazine
