NEW YORK (AP) - The Beastie Boys are doing their part to help out New York City by organizing New Yorkers Against Violence, a benefit featuring the Strokes, B-52's, and Cibo Matto, among others. "In the midst of this madness, Adam [Horowitz] and Mike [Diamond], and I got together to discuss what we might be able to do that would be constructive," explains Beastie Boy Adam Yauch in a letter announcing the show. "I hope that anyone that has the time and is in the neighborhood will be able to come and join us." New Yorkers Against Violence will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Oct. 28. All proceeds from the show will benefit the New York Association for New Americans and the New York Women's Foundation. In addition to the previously mentioned performances, the bill also includes Saul Williams, DJ Stretch Armstrong, Rival Schools, and Rateh Fatah Ali Khan. In other benefit news, Kiss has been forced to pull out of the upcoming United We Stand What More Can I Give? benefit in Washington, D.C., on Sunday (Oct. 21) due to Paul Stanley's impending hip surgery. Also axing his name from the show is Mick Jagger, blaming a premature announcement being released before he had committed. The latest additions to the megagig, however, include Huey Lewis and the News and Carole King. The Backstreet Boys, in addition to their set, will sing the "The Star Spangled Banner" to open the show.
