The Hot Sardines
Wednesday, January 23
$32/$35/$38/$40
The Hot Sardines have brought their contagious brand of joy to audiences all over the world. Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer "Miz Elizabeth" Bougerol combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians - and their very own tap dancer - to play "hot jazz" as it was in the era when live music was king: with a little glamour, a little grit, and a lot of passion. Even while giving voice to the history-defining jazz of the 1920's, 30's, and 40's, the Hot Sardines' vibrant performances bridge generations and captivate 21st century audiences.
Susan Werner
Sunday, January 27; 7:00 p.m.
$28/$35/$38/$42
Chicago-based, Iowa-born singer/songwriter Susan Werner opted to forgo a career as an opera singer, choosing to dedicate herself to songwriting instead, building a reputation at jazz clubs, coffeehouses, and folk festivals along the Eastern Seaboard. Werner has toured the nation with acts such as Richard Thompson, Keb Mo, and Joan Armatrading, and was featured in a 1998 Peter, Paul, and Mary PBS special as one of the best of the next generation of folk songwriters. She has 11 albums to date, the most recent of which, Hayseed, is the fourth in a series of concept albums, and pays tribute to American agriculture and Werner's Iowa farm roots, with subjects such as farmer's markets, agrochemicals, climate change, drought, longing for a sense of place, and the movement towards sustainable agriculture.
Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton
Monday-Tuesday, February 4-5
$45/$48/$55/$58
Ms. Lisa Fischer is stepping into the spotlight once again. After four decades of singing backup for icons like the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, and Nine Inch Nails, Fischer is offering her own humble, heartfelt songs accompanied by her inventive band Grand Baton in this return engagement at City Winery.
The unexpected success of the Oscar-winning documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013) altered the course of Fischer's musical journey. The film told her story, complete with clips of her 1991 Grammy-winning R&B hit "How Can I Ease The Pain," live footage of her legendary duets with
Mick Jagger on "Gimme Shelter," and glowing testimonials from famous colleagues like Sting, Patti Austin, and Chris Botti. It showcased her virtuosity and vulnerability, opened a window on her sometimes lonely life on the road, earned her a second Grammy award, and left audiences eager to see and hear more.
We Banjo 3
Friday, March 1; 7:00 & 10:00 p.m.
$25/$28/$32/$35
