Accompanied by Adam Poulin on fiddle, Klein delivers a stark meditation on financial hardship and the struggle to pursue your passions when there are bills to be paid, albeit with an eye towards freedom and escape. "They're gonna repossess my soul," he laments over his gentle acoustic and Poulin's wistful strains, but rather than caving to his fears, Klein looks towards
Texas and Highway 61 for a sense of liberation."
"I feel like I wrote a coming of age album with Wounded Electric Youth, butLow Flyin' Planes continues to ask some similar questions and take stock of the past several years."
"I think it's a fairly dark record, in part, with a heightened sense of yearning, but it's real," said Adam.
"I think one of an individual's greatest challenges is to remain true to oneself. To stay alert, energized, driven, and inspired. To do the hard, intentional work of constant growth, learning, and seeking, and to harness the resulting clarity, ambitions, and direction into purposeful action."
Speaking about 'Crossin' Texas,' and the album generally, Klein says: "It longs for the open road - that liberating feeling of possibility, stimulation, andaliveness. I've had a mystique about Texas, and its music. Highway 61 is steeped in American lore and history. In this song, and at many other times, I want to be on the move and to take in such places," said Adam.
"We are surrounded and bombarded by so much that possesses little real meaning or valuable currency. I want to be present on a higher plane, stimulated, excited, alive with joy and fear each day," said Adam. "I have found this feeling in travels, in places like West Africa, India,Nicaragua. I found it on the great American road, from Big Bend to Big Sur to New York City to the Mississippi Delta," said Adam.
"The songs of Low Flyin' Planes speak to these notions.
Whatever degree I have fallen short of fulfilling these goals in my daily life is expressed in the songs. But the beauty of a life well-lived is the possibility of development and change. Since writing and recording these songs, I've become a father and had a chance to enjoy a year and a half of the growth of a child. My hope for each of us is that we get the time and ability to keep moving forward and live our way into the people we want to become."
