LONDON, UK (AP) - Sharleen Spiteri, lead singer with pop band Texas, is taking a break from music to begin an acting career after landing her first cinema role.
Spiteri, 33, will play a detective opposite Edward Furlong in new thriller Three Blind Mice, a film based on cyber reality. Her agent said the vocalist turned down the chance to play Satine in Moulin Rouge - the role eventually filled by Nicole Kidman.
But the new role does not mean the end of Spiteri's music career, he added.
"Sharleen is on a break from the music side of things at the moment and this role has come along at the right time," her agent, William Rice, said. "She wanted a new challenge between recording projects and this role has caught her eye."

She will begin filming the movie, which is to be shot in London and Paris, in January.
Mr Rice said it will take several months to film, and will be aimed at the European market when it is released some time next year.

Success

But he added that she had no regrets about turning down the chance to star in the hugely successful Moulin Rouge.
In Three Blind Mice, she will appear with Furlong, who starred in American History X.

Texas will record a new album - their sixth studio release - next summer. The band has enjoyed three UK number one albums and hits including I Don't Want A Lover, Say What You Want, Black Eyed Boy and Inner Smile since forming in 1986.
