New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Composer Steve Reich was on WNYC's New Sounds on Friday to discuss his new piece, Reich/Richter. The piece premiered as part of Reich Richter Pärt, a live performance-exhibition pairing works by Gerhard Richter with the new Reich piece and extant work by Arvo Pärt, at The Shed in New York City on Saturday for the new venue's Opening Weekend. Reich/Richter examines the intersection between Richter's formula for his " Patterns" series and Reich's repeating musical structures in a genre-crossing film made with director Corinna Belz. You can hear the conversation along with a live recording of Reich's piece Runner, a precursor to Reich/Richter, on New Sounds below.
Reich/Richter will be performed by Ensemble Signal and the International Contemporary Ensemble, in alternation, at The Shed through June 2; for tickets, visit theshed.org.
The New Sounds episode also includes "Valencia," a piece from Caroline Shaw's forthcoming album, Orange, performed by Attacca Quartet. The album will be released a week from Friday, on April 19, from New Amsterdam / Nonesuch Records, and is available to pre-order. Attacca Quartet will perform music from the album at WNYC's The Green Space in New York City this Friday as part of that venue's tenth anniversary marathon celebration.
