New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Upon hearing the genre tag "8-bit chiptune hip-hop" you might think you need some sort of engineering degree to understand Missingno.'s debut album 808-Bit Music, but at its heart, the nine tracks are a dreamy journey through slow-burning R&B.
Based in Akron, OH and raised in Dallas, Missingno. adapts his name from a "glitch" in the original Pokémon game (Red, Blue, Yellow). It's a code that means a "missing number," however he doesn't miss a beat on his new album. Missingno. establishes his "Chip Hop" sound best on the lead single "Mood," a mellow track that feels like you're swimming through dark waters in search of land, bobbing through the wave of melody.
"Mood was sort of a response to the women in my life who always called me 'moody' just because I didn't feel like talking," says Missingno. "Hearing that specific word 'moody' just irked me in a certain way to where it stood out in my mind."
As the title suggests, 808-Bit Music has a heavy presence of 808's throughout, while incorporating samples from classic video game OSTs including Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokémon R/B/Y, and Donkey Kong Country 2.
