Laurie Anderson Named Joe's Pub Vanguard Artist & Residency Recipient
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Congratulations to Laurie Anderson, the 2020 recipient of The Vanguard Award & Residency at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in New York City. The program celebrates the work and influence of an icon of American popular culture. Anderson is being honored for her prolific career as a creative pioneer inspiring audiences with her groundbreaking works—daring multi-media presentations and innovative use of technology across the worlds of art, theater, and experimental music. She will be honored at the third-annual Vanguard Gala on February 3, with an all-star slate of artists and friends, with musical direction by Shara Nova of My Brightest Diamond and Chris Bruce, and her year of curation and performance will take shape in a Sunday night performance each month, from March to December.

"I love Sunday evening shows," Anderson says. "The end of the weekend is such a no man's land—an interesting time to play with new combinations. The series I'm planning for Joe's Pub will feature writers as well as musicians—sometimes collaborating, sometimes jamming sometimes making entirely new things. And since it's election season, hopefully there will be some challenging political moments as artists, writers, and musicians confront and express our tumultuous times."

The year will consist of her own headlining shows, interspersed with those of mentees, collaborators, and friends. More information for performances and further programming, including ticketing, is forthcoming.

Alex Knowlton, Director of Joe's Pub, said, "Laurie and her use of music, visual art, technology, and language in creating complicated and beautiful expressions of human experience not only push artistic boundaries, but serve as a beacon for us at Joe's Pub. Her career is the example of an artist using their work to open conversation about the impact humanity has on our world, both interpersonally and environmentally. We are honored to invite Laurie and her community of creators and thinkers more deeply into our artistic family for the coming year."
The 2019 winner of the Vanguard Award & Residency is Judy Collins.
