New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Rhiannon Giddens and multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi begin the UK and European leg of their there is no Other tour with two sold-out concerts for the EFG London Jazz Festival: at the HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs chapel tonight, with a special support performance from an ensemble of prisoners, and at Royal Festival Hall on Friday. The tour continues in the UK with concerts in Brighton, Basingstoke, Bath, Buxton, Liverpool, Gateshead, and Edinburgh, then heads to the Continent in December for shows in the Netherlands, Germany, and France, and two nights in Turrisi's hometown of Turin, Italy, in January. They return to the States in February and head to New Zealand and Australia in March.
While in London, Giddens and Turrisi will be on BBC
Radio 4's Woman's Hour this Friday at 10am GMT, for a conversation and performance; that same day, they will be on Scala Radio, at 11:30am GMT. Back in the US, they can be seen on PBS stations across the country this weekend as Austin City Limits airs a special presentation of performance highlights from the Americana
Music Association's Americana Honors & Awards, held at the historic Ryman Auditorium in September. Giddens took home the inaugural Legacy of Americana Award that night.
there is no Other was produced by Joe Henry and tracked over five days in Dublin. The album is at once a condemnation of "othering" and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. "This is acoustic roots music at its most glorious," exclaims Uncut, "and Giddens is fast becoming the genre's brightest star in the firmament." Uncut recently named there is no Other among the Albums of the Year, as did Mojo and Fopp.
