New York, NY (Top40 Charts) On Sam Gendel's Nonesuch Records debut album, Satin Doll, due March 13, Gendel, on saxophone, is joined by Gabe Noel on electric bass and Philippe Melanson on electronic percussion for a sonic construction/deconstruction of jazz standards, including Miles Davis' "Freddie Freeloader," Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," and Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll." We've collected the songs to which Gendel refers on this futuristic homage to historical jazz in the Satin Doll References playlist on Spotify and Apple Music below.
The Los Angeles Times's Randall Roberts, in a preview of Satin Doll, calls it "a woozy, blissfully twisted album." You can preview of the album via the video for the track "Afro Blue," here, where you can also pre-order the album in the Top40-Charts.com Store, iTunes, and Amazon, and for streaming at Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp. Gendel will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 29.
