SANTA MONICA, CA. (Brookes Company Media Relations) - Legendary music label Savoy Jazz is proud to announce its premier association with perhaps the most legendary entertainer of them all in a special musical celebration, "That Old Feeling": Classic Ballads From "The
Judy Garland Show" - a collection of twenty songs hand-picked from the soundtracks of Garland's CBS-TV series, which ran for twenty-six episodes in the 1963-64 season. Rather than compile again the standard numbers she introduced or popularized, this Savoy Jazz collection provides a prime sampler of Garland's command over the fresh and unfamiliar.
"That Old Feeling" presents eighteen solo performances and two classic duets (with
Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett) and provides a composite new view of the musical artistry of
Judy Garland with songs originating in Broadway shows, classic Hollywood films, Tin Pan Alley and the American folk heritage. The presentation is also highlighted by Judy's spoken introductions on key tracks and several never-before published photographs in the accompanying booklet. "The Judy Garland Show" was a much-deserved star vehicle for an artist now considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, entertainers to hit the stage and screen. The series is much revered for its fascinating showcasing of Garland's talent and the many, many stars that appeared and, indeed, paid homage to the legendary performer. "That Old Feeling" features a diversity of material almost unfathomable...yet totally typical of her timelessness and versatility.
The selections range from the autobiographical ("Once in a Lifetime" and "Through the Years"), to the dramatic ("By Myself"), the philosophical ("Lost in the Stars"), the gentle ("Here's That Rainy Day"), the wistful ("I'm Always Chasing Rainbows"), the romantic ("The Last Dance") and also includes the quintessential torch songs ("As Long as He Needs Me"). The tracks feature a wide range of live musical accompaniment - from full orchestra to piano and rhythm section to vocal chorus and solo instrumentation.
The songs featured have been selected by Emmy-winning producer and Garland biographer, John Fricke, who also wrote the liner notes and programmed the running order of the material. Says Fricke, "Judy did several concept albums during her tenure with Capitol Records, but that was nearly 50 years ago. This CD gives us a chance to revisit that kind of concept in an innovative way - by using songs that had never before been assembled in a single package. It was a genuine pleasure, because Judy's own inherent ability to pace her repertoire gave us such a variety of ballads from which to choose."
