NASHVILLE, TN. (www.lotosnile.com/ www.patriciavonne.com) - There's no way around it—Patricia Vonne is a true Renaissance woman. This multitalented performer can be seen on the big screen in the new noir tour de force, Sin City, based on the graphic novels of comic book icon Frank Miller. She plays the magnetic character Dallas a.k.a. 'Zorro Girl.' Vonne's brother and frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez directed the film. The two also teamed up to write the Spanish-language title track 'Guitarras y Castanuelas' (Guitars & Castanets), to Vonne's upcoming album on Corazong USA—the first release for the European imprint now launching its roster in America.
Although the bilingual album doesn't release until June 28, it's already generating more heat than the summer sun on the sidewalks of Austin, Texas, where Vonne is based.
She wowed a star-studded crowd with an incendiary performance at Stubbs BBQ after the Austin screening of Sin City on March 31. The movie premiere was hosted by Rodriguez and took place at the Paramount Theater in Austin. Miller and co-stars Jaime King and Nick Stahl were also on hand for the premiere. Other notable attendees included Ethan Hawke, Richard Linklater, Harry Knowles and more.
The after-party was the perfect showcase for Vonne's upcoming Guitars & Castanets album, which features some of Austin's most in-demand musicians. In addition to Texas guitar god Charlie Sexton, the disc benefits from the stellar playing of sax man extraordinaire Johnny Reno, singer/songwriter Jon Dee Graham, nylon string guitar wizard Rick Del Castillo and keyboard player Michael Ramos (The BoDeans, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin). Producer Carl Thiel, who's worked with Bob Schneider and Monte Montgomery, helmed the control board for Vonne's second album.
Guitars & Castanets continues the evolution of one of Austin's most distinct stylists. Vonne crosses musical boundaries with ease and an unerring ear for the perfect blend of Texas roots rock and south-ofthe-border flavor. The straightforward rocker 'Texas Burning' and mariachi-inflected charmers like "La Gitana de Triana" and "Fiesta Sangria," reveal an artist in full command of her songs. One who possesses that rare quality that all songwriters long for—originality. The bilingual album also showcases an artist in lyrical command of two languages—Spanish and English.
The disc is enhanced with a music video "Traeme Paz," a Spanish-language track from the motion picture soundtrack of Rodriguez's film Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The video features footage from the film with Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Johnny Depp and was filmed by director Marcel Rodriguez and edited by Robert Rodriguez. A new video, shot by Marcel Rodriguez, supports Vonne's Guitars & Castanets and is a cinematic performance of 'Texas Burning.'
Yes, Vonne is a Renaissance woman. One who rocks. One who knows where she came from and where she's going. And you can listen to the journey. It's right there on Guitars & Castanets—a Tex-Mex rock 'n' roots ride you'll want to take too.
