SYDNEY, Australia (SONY BMG Australia) -
John Legend was one of six Sony BMG artists to take home a BET Award in Hollywood on Tuesday night, topping the class as Best New Artist. Other winners included Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, Usher,
Omarion and Ciara. Congratulations to you all!
Sony BMG artists scooped the pool at the 5th annual BET Awards winning six of the 10 music-category trophies. An eventful night all-round, the show was kicked off by the reformed Fugees who gave a stellar performance of some of their classic tracks, getting things off to an impressive start. Not to be outdone, superstar piano man
John Legend was joined by
Stevie Wonder for a rendition of his upcoming single 'Ordinary People'.
Stevie Wonder was quick to heap praise on newcomer John.
"It was an honor to perform with John Legend," Stevie told BET.com. "He is someone that the world will hear from, some great singing from, great music is nothing without sincerity. What I get from him is sincerity. ["Ordinary People"] is my favorite song of the year."
John fought off some hot competition to take out the trophy for Best New Artist, including the fabulous Ciara, who won the Best Collaboration Award for her track '1, 2 Step' featuring Missy Elliott. Ciara also performed her scorching new single 'Oh' onstage with Ludacris.
"Just to be a part of this event really means a lot to me," Ciara told VH1 backstage. "I had some jitters, I must say. I usually don't say those words, 'nervous' and 'pressure' and stuff like that, but I can say that today. Earlier, I don't know what was wrong with me but I couldn't stand still. I was all over the place."
Omarion was also excited to be awarded the Viewer's Choice Award for the video to his awesome track 'O'.
"All of my wonderful fans, they're sick; they always come through for me," Omarion told VH1. "And this was my first time performing solo in front of all my peers and was something I always dreamt about."
Destiny's Child took out the award for Best Group, and had pulses racing with their performance of 'Cater 2 U', where the girls performed lap dances on Nelly, actor Terrence Howard and basketballer Magic Johnson.
