New York, NY (Top40 Charts) I.Am.Tru.Starr is to release his new album, Viva on 29th October, a collection of songs which tell the truth about what it means to be black in
America in 2020. I.Am.Tru.Starr the real deal - an artist who creates songs which truly encapsulate his feelings, such is the case with his recent single, Something's Gotta Change, a track which he hopes will hit home with this generation like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On did in the 1970s. Having already built up millions of streams across Spotify and Apple Music, the single is taken from his forthcoming album, Viva, a collection of tracks that showcase I.Am.Tru.Starr's own take on soul and hip-hop, tackling issues at the very heart of
Black Lives Matter. I.Am.Tru.Starr speaks from experience - having spent five years in a federal prison, he treats his songs as a means of paying back his debt to society - with Something's Gotta Change, no-one can deny that the emotion and message hits the mark.
"I am a literal walking story of redemption. Been shot, shot at, shot back, sold drugs to people who were like family and a host of other shit that shall go unspoken that led me to spending five years in federal prison. Though I've paid my debt to the government, I've still yet to pay my debt back to society and the people that I had a hand in causing harm to. So, I attempt to do that through music. Giving people hope through song. This society is sedated and I wanna do my part in waking 'em up"
Originally from Rochester, New York and now living in Las Vegas, I.Am.Tru.Starr is surrounded by the best and worst elements of what it means to be alive in 2020 as a young black man. Something's Gotta Change is a track which I.Am.Tru.Starr sees as a comment on society everywhere:
"My family explained to me when I was young that Emmett Till (whose lynching was a major influence on the emergence of
Black Rights in 50s and 60s America) was a distant cousin, and what he went through has always helped to fuel the passion in my music".
Something's Gotta Change is the first track to be released from I.Am.Tru.Starr's forthcoming album, Viva, which he describes as a celebration of life and all the important things in it that make it worth living - good, bad and ugly. With an immersive 70s-style funk sprinkled melody; strolling, infectious rhythm and lyrics which strike at the very heart of today's social problems, it's a track which has real heart and potency, with the album packed with urgency and power:
"Family, love and legacy. Not this bullshit society tries to get you to put priority on like money or the new hot car or whatever they want you to be enamoured with, then turn around and make you feel like shit for not having it. Growing up in Rochester and getting caught up in those streets up there, I thought that was what life was. Fast forward a few years, I'm living in Vegas, became a father and I now see what life is and all it can be and just how beautiful it is. VIVA is about the celebration of life and all the important things in it that make it worth living. We are all in a place of appreciation for life and the things that truly matter. VIVA! Long live us!"
