NEW YORK (AP) - Alicia Keys is the standout nominee for the 29th American Music Awards, set for Jan. 9 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The soulful newcomer is up for five awards for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite New Artist in the pop/rock category and Favorite Female Artist, Favorite New Artist, and Favorite Album (for Songs in A Minor) in the soul/rhythm & blues category.

Several artists garnered two nominations each, including the late Aaliyah, Dave Matthews Band, Janet Jackson, 'NSync, Tim McGraw, R. Kelly, Destiny's Child, Brooks & Dunn, Shaggy, and Lonestar.

The AMAs, which will air live as a three-hour special on ABC, are voted on by the public through ballots sent out to 20,000 people by the National Family Opinion, Inc.
