NEW YORK (Virgin Records) - "Feel Good Inc.," the still blazing first single from Gorillaz' already platinum-certified "Demon Days," won Breakthrough Video and Best Special Effects In a Video at the 2005 MTV Video
Music Awards. The hypnotic clip, which features flying windmills and landmasses as well as a cameo from De La Soul, was directed by
Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett and
Passion Pictures' Pete Candeland, and produced by Cara Speller and Emilie Walmsley. Production company
Passion Pictures also handled special effects.
The video is currently in rotation in MTV's Big Ten, MTV2's Elite 8, MTVU's Summa Cum Laude, and MTV Hits' Power rotation - all of which are the highest possible rotation status of each channel.
Virgin recording artists
Gorillaz are the biggest animated music group in the world - or to hear bassist Murdoc Nicalls tell it, the entire universe. The band's sophomore set, "Demon Days," has been RIAA-certified Platinum for U.S. sales exceeding one million since its May 24 release.
Simultaneously, "Demon Days'" irresistible first single "Feel Good Inc." has gone No 1 at the
Modern Rock format, according to BDS. They have been very actively promoting "Demon Days," having appeared on the July cover of WIRED, completed an extensive virtual tour of U.S. radio stations in June, unveiled a limited edition line of collectible
Gorillaz figures in conjunction with Kid Robot, and more recently having shot a fall fashion portfolio for MAXIM.
Reached for comment on "Demon Days'" astounding success,
Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs said, "The fact that people are buying an album that has got so many influences, and mixtures of music, from African, to hip-hop to rap, dub, bits of Latin... That is gratifying. It just shows that even in a time when the world could be seen to be in conflict, that on one level people are still really open to the sounds, the cultures... just the flavor of other nations, right around the globe."
"Yeah," added vocalist 2D, "or maybe people just like those cartoon videos we make."
