New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Detroit's psychedelic R&B outfit, Cousin Mouth, is launching a series of stripped-down, analog videos on IGTV. The series will begin with "Lucifer In the Flesh," a song from the band's latest record, MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer. Paying homage to the
Detroit music community, Cousin Mouth recruited a number of well-known local musicians for this series including Ian Fink, Salar Ansari, and
Jonah Baseball. A new video will debut on IGTV every Wednesday starting on July 7th. Fans can watch the music videos on Cousin Mouth's Instagram @cousinmouth.
The video series was filmed at Detroit's
Feeder Loft by Salar Ansari, who also mixed and mastered the sessions. "Since we recorded the majority of the instrumentation live at the
Feeder Loft in Detroit, it felt fitting to come back and redo a few tracks from the album in a more stripped-down acoustic way," explains lead singer Alex Burns. "I wrote basically the entire album just with vocals and guitar originally, so it was cool to hear and play them again in that way, especially since we haven't really been able to perform it live in the way I would prefer to just yet with everything starting to re-open." For the live sessions,
Burns recruited longtime friend and fellow
Detroit musician, Ian Fink to play piano on the tracks. "Ian's one of the most talented musicians I've ever met and a close friend of mine, so when I had the idea to shoot these videos he was one of the first people I had in mind to accompany me."
Jonah Baseball was brought in as the video editor for his creative work with analog technology. "I'm a huge fan of the texture and color
Jonah is able to achieve with the analog video technology. Texture was essential for me throughout this new record and he really tapped into a simple and beautiful nostalgic quality with these videos that match that intention." The upcoming series will include "Lucifer In the Flesh," "Every Bad Man," and more.
Cousin Mouth is the brainchild of songwriter and producer Alex Burns. Their sound is inspired by artists like
James Blake, D'Angelo, and Todd Rundgren; moody and sultry R&B with some pop influence. The tone of their latest album, MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer, reflects their signature groove, beat-based style mixed with a psychedelic-dreamy sound. When naming the band, "Mouth" came from
Burns being a singer foremost, and "Cousin" comes from the familial connection they access through music and the community that it builds. Cousin Mouth has been touted by The
Detroit News, Metro Times, Playground Detroit, WDIV's Click on Detroit, Oakland Press, Atwood Magazine, Unclear Magazine, and more.
