New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Toronto-based singer-songwriter/producer Chris Grey has carved out a career path many musicians could only ever dream of. As a producer, the prolific 19-year-old has racked up monster collabs with the likes of Brazilian stars Öwnboss and Zerky, and Canadian hip-hop duo 88GLAM, including a pair of tracks on their JUNO AWARD-nominated album New Mania.
Grey now confidently steps back into the role of recording artist on his latest single, "I should be happy," proving himself as one of Canada's most exciting new voices in R&B and Pop. His unforgettable voice and signature falsetto are loaded with intensity, urgency, and emotional impact.
The song touches upon themes of social anxiety & hidden depression, highlighting how many of us silently feel.
The music video for "I should be happy" proves to be the ultimate complement to the track. The one-shot video/one camera clip was produced and directed by Grey, and captures the singer in a state of emptiness, standing in stark contrast to a myriad of milestones happily unfolding around him amongst his friends, as the song progresses.
"I've been involved in some form of music for as long as I can remember," says Grey, reflecting on a childhood that found him immersed in instruments, albums, and ideas. Both parents were born in Kingston - his father in the Jamaican capital and mother the historic Canadian city - and their respective cultural backgrounds cohere seamlessly in Grey's work.
"My sound really stems from those two worlds," he says, referencing the reggae, R&B, and disco records his father, a famous DJ in his homeland, would constantly spin, along with the Canadian pop and rock staples favoured by his mom.
Buoyed by his dazzling and imaginative production, "I should be happy" is the latest and arguably most exciting evolutionary step in Grey's dynamic career to date.
