Sydney, AU (EMI MUSIC AUSTRALIA) - 'One Step ahead' is a song I can listen to over and over. I knew it even before I knew what it was. It's had a familiarity to me right from the time I first heard it. As is often the way with The Finns, everything about the composition just feels right. They manage to have such broad appeal while still being so beautifully unique. It was a great treat to delve further into their music for this project. I wanted my version of 'One Step Ahead' to be a new incarnation of the song, rather than just adding my female vocal to a similar track. Nick Littlemore from Pnau was eager to collaborate and took the production to it's weird and beautiful final being. Most of the samples that make up the song started with my voice. The vocal delivery we arrived at is pent up and needy but super restrained. Rarely do I sing above a breathy whine for the entire track. Nick encouraged me to take this theatrical approach to the extreme and in doing so I found the desperation and confusion in the lyrics all the more prominent. It was a very free and enjoyable process and I am really pleased to have been involved.
