New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Sara Melson's unique and arresting voice cracks and pierces with vulnerability and strength, echoing a blend of Cat Power, Mazzy Star, Carole King and Patti Smith. She writes, performs and records on piano and guitar, solo and with her band, experimenting live and in the studio with various interpretations of her dreamy, anthemic folk-pop.
Danny Hechter's remix of Sara Melson's new single "Wound Too Tight" is set to release Aug.19. The original acoustic track was a collaboration with Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee & Foo Fighters engineer Samon Rajabnik.
The remix—produced, arranged and mixed by guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Hechter, who added symphonic layers of synths, guitar, bass and drums—is a soothing, ethereal trip through a psychedelic dreamscape featuring Melson's intimate, understated vocals embedded in lush harmonies over a driving, trance-inducing groove. Hechter and Melson have been close collaborators since Hechter music-directed Melson's live band and co-produced several tracks on Melson's Wild & Precious Life EP (2020).
"Wound Too Tight" is a healing balm for frayed nerves and lonely hearts, a raw and vulnerable meditation on loneliness, insomnia and yearning, and on the power of love, touch and connection to take away pain.
About the song, Melson comments:
"The song in a way is a meditation. It was a bit scary to be that vulnerable, because it's me admitting that I just wanna sleep next to someone - not just anyone, but a lover—one who would care enough to go through all of it together with me.
I sent a demo version to Rami [Jaffee], who plays keys for the Foo Fighters. He and I have known each other for a lot of years. I was super lucky to have him and Samon Rajabnik, an amazingly talented engineer who works with the Foos, bring this song to life, and play such gorgeous parts all over it. We recorded on Rami's vintage mics in my living room. It was a really heavenly "post"-pandemic recording experience.
The droney vibe of the track really lends itself to a remix, which elevates it into a sort of hypnotic trance. Danny [Hechter] and I have been working together for the past several years. I consider myself truly blessed to have him as a collaborator. He music-directed my live band and co-produced several of the songs on my EP, Wild & Precious Life. He's kind of like a modern-day Mozart. He plays everything, and really well. Drums were his first instrument, and he's toured the world playing guitar—most recently on The Jonas Brothers' world tour, with their opener Jordan McGraw—but he's also an amazing keyboardist and bass player, as well as a gifted arranger, producer and mixer. And for someone so young, he's got an encyclopedic, savant-like knowledge of music.
Danny also has an exuberant pop sensibility, which when merged with my wistful, spare, intimate vocal style on this track creates a soothing yet driving, groovy psychedelic trip. He had me sing many more layers of vocal harmonies to add to the original, and he played multiple layers of synths, guitars, bass, beats and drums. The resulting remix is a symphonic soundtrack to an ecstasy-infused makeout session.
Rob Kleiner mastered both the original and remixed versions. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have had such an amazing team on this project. I hope the song serves to soothe some souls."
