Darryl Worley raised more than $125,000 at his annual Tennessee River Run event, it was announced today by organizers. A day of fun and music, the 4th annual event was presented
September 17th by West Tennessee Healthcare and held at Pickwick Landing in Pickwick, Tennessee. Of the money raised, Worley donated $50,000 on the spot to the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Rescue Fund. The presentation was made on stage to Jim Whitehorn of the Red Cross. Most of the proceeds will remain in Hardin County and McNairy County, where the money will be used to fund the variety of charitable organizations supported by the
Darryl Worley Foundation. Additional funds will be made available to St Jude Children's Hospital, Ayers Children's Medical Center, LeBonheur Children's Medical Center and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
As always, this year's event offered a little something for everyone. With a blue Tennessee sky overhead, the 8,000 participants enjoyed a day of events and activities, capped with a concert featuring some of country music's brightest entertainers. This year's event featured a 5K Run, both a catfish and bass tournament, a golf tournament which, much to his embarrassment and dismay, Worley won, as well as crowd favorites, the Motorcycle Poker Run and the Boat Poker Run. For those unfamiliar with this ‘sporting event,' participants ride their respective vehicle to several points around Pickwick Landing and at each destination, play a hand of poker.
The evening concluded with a concert starring Jamie O'Neal, Ronnie Millsap, Hot Apple Pie, the Stevens Sisters and of course, hometown hero Worley. 'I always have such a great time at this event. I get to hang out with my neighbors, participate in some really fun events, and raise money for some very good causes,' Worley said. 'I can't thank the people of this area enough for supporting the Tennessee River Run each year. And I want to especially thank my friends who came out this year to perform for the folks. I couldn't have done it without them. Jamie, Ronnie, the guys in Hot Apple Pie and the Stevens Sisters -you guys have the biggest hearts of anyone I know, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.'
