Music Soundtrax has released North Country -
Music From The Motion Picture, an album of songs featured in the highly anticipated Warner Bros. Motion Picture, "North Country," starring Charlize Theron,
Frances McDormand, Sissy Spacek, and Woody Harrelson.
"North Country," directed by Niki Caro ("Whale Rider"), opens nationwide on Friday, October 21.
North Country - Music From The Motion Picture centers around the songs of Bob Dylan (who was born and raised in the Minnesota Iron Range) and premieres a brand-new Dylan song, "Tell Ol' Bill." Other classic Dylan recordings featured on the album include "Lay Lady Lady," "Sweetheart Like You," and "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)" as well as two rare covers of Dylan songs: "Girl Of The North Country," a 1968 recording by 12-string guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke (a Minnesota resident since the late '60s), and "Paths Of Victory," a seldom heard early Dylan composition, performed by the avant-indie singer/songwriter Cat Power.
Rounding out the album are classic songs - "Werewolves Of London" by Warren Zevon, Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," "If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me)" by the Bellamy Brothers and Mac Davis' "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" - and three pieces ("North Country," "A Saturday In My Classroom," and "Standing Up") from the film's score by composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
Based on a true story, "North Country" is inspired by the book "Class Action: The Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law," by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler.
Josey Aimes (played by Academy Award winner Charlize Theron), a single mother with two children, returns to her hometown in Northern Minnesota after a failed marriage. Seeking work in the iron mines, the predominant source of employment in the region, she finds a male-dominated world where the last thing the miners want is women competing for scarce jobs, women who, according to long-held chauvinistic attitudes, have no business blasting rock or driving trucks. The few women who manage to get jobs in the mines are subjected to pornographic taunts and brutality from a work-force threatened by their very presence.
"North Country" is the story of how one woman pioneered and won the first sexual harassment class action suit in the United States, a legal milestone that immeasurably improved working conditions for American women.
