LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts) - The hyperactive musical Moulin Rouge was named best musical or comedy movie and took two other awards at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony. A Beautiful Mind won best drama, as well as the best actor award for Russell Crowe, who portrayed schizophrenic mathematician John Nash.

Crowe eloquently thanked director Ron Howard for allowing his actors to be adventurous.
"A Beautiful Mind is just a movie; it's just a piece of entertainment at the end of the day folks," said the Oscar-winning actor. "But hopefully it helps us open our hearts, gives us a little more understanding, it gives us a little more compassion."

Nicole Kidman claimed the award for best actress in a musical or comedy at Sunday's Golden Globes, while Gene Hackman won best comedic film actor honours.
"My hands are shaking," said Kidman, who starred as a cabaret singer in the hyperactive Moulin Rouge. "This is really, really special because I never thought I'd be in a musical - let alone win an award for one."
The film also won best picture in the musical or comedy category.

Hackman, who couldn't make it to the ceremony, won for his performance as the conniving head of a family of former child prodigies in The Royal Tenenbaums.

An emotional Sissy Spacek won best actress in a drama for In The Bedroom.
"I feel so blessed to get to do what I love to do and work with so many wonderfully talented people," Spacek said. "The best part is I get to go home to my most precious family."

Supporting actor honours went to performers who played supportive spouses in two true-life dramas about ailing geniuses - Jennifer Connelly for portraying the dedicated wife of Nash in A Beautiful Mind and Jim Broadbent for playing the husband of novelist Iris Murdoch, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, in Iris.
"It's really shocking," Connelly said backstage. "It's kind of hard for me right now to wrap my head around."
A Beautiful Mind also won best screenplay.

Robert Altman was best director for Gosford Park, and the Bosnian film No Man's Land won best foreign language picture.

The ceremony, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is considered by some to be a barometer for the Academy Awards in March.
