NEW YORK (Hip-Hop Youth Summit) - Reverend Run of Run-DMC and Nas were among those who attended the first Hip-Hop Youth Summit on Monday.

Organized by Def Jam record label founder Russell Simmons, the event attracted about 800 people to the York College in Queens, New York, where it was held.

The network was put together to encourage those involved in hip-hop and its culture to take more responsibility for it. According to Nas, hip-hop's connection to youth was at one time shared by Martin Luther King Jr., whom he said, "wanted to know what the youth's issues were; what their problems were. He wanted to fix that." The summit coincided with Martin Luther King Day.
