NEW YORK, NY (By Sydney Margetson/ Atlantic Records) - Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist
Young Dro continues his domination of Urban radio as his new single, "Rubberband Banks," was the No 1 most-added track on the national playlists last week. The track picked up an additional 19 adds this week. The Atlanta-based rapper's debut album, "BEST THANG SMOKIN'" - which includes the breakthrough smash, "
Shoulder Lean" - made a stunning premiere upon its August 29th release, topping Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and placing at No 3 on the Billboard 200.
The "Rubberband Banks" companion video is already blowing up at the major video networks. The clip is a Top 20 smash at both BET and MTV, and was recently an "Unleashed" featured video on MTV2.
In other news, Young Dro is currently getting set to join his "Shoulder Lean" cohort, Grand Hustle/Atlantic's own T.I., on a major U.S. concert tour. The dates - which kick off October 27th in Hampton, Virginia - will hit a variety of major markets through November, including Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, and St. Louis. Complete details of the tour will be announced shortly.
In addition, Young Dro and T.I. recently taped a blazing live performance for an upcoming installment of "It's Showtime at the Apollo." The set -- due to air later this fall - features on-stage renditions of both "Shoulder Lean" and "Rubberband Banks."
The swaggering "Shoulder Lean" was without a doubt this summer's hip-hop party anthem. The track reached the No 1 spot on both the Billboard Urban Monitor chart and the R&R Urban Mainstream chart, while its companion video reached the peak position on BET's "106 & Park" countdown, as well as on MTV2.
Young Dro and "Shoulder Lean" also lit up the wireless world, with the track's ringtone currently logging sales of more than 1.5 million units. The ringtone can be purchased directly by texting DRO to 73804. (Works on most carriers with participating handsets. Standard text message rates apply.)
Born and bred in Atlanta's Bankhead Court, Young Dro, born Djuan Hart, first got into hip-hop as a teen, when close friend Chris "Daddy Mack" Smith scored platinum success with his group, Kris Kross. It was around this time he also befriended the now multi-platinum rapper T.I. After setting Atlanta ablaze with his independent hit single, "Yes Sir," from his 2002 regional hit album, "I GOT THAT DRO," Young Dro reunited with T.I., which led to him signing with T.I.'s label, Grand Hustle, in 2004.
"BEST THANG SMOKIN'" sees the 27-year-old rapper narrating his life from poverty, to falling prey to dead-end recording deals, to finally obtaining his dreams of becoming an accomplished emcee. The album features production by some of today's hip-hop heavyweights, including Jazze Pha, Chad West, Keith Mack, and Grand Hustle's own Khao and Lil C, as well as collaborations with T.I., Slim Thug, and Xtaci.
