NEW YORK (CNet.com) - Britney Spears is the star of the new PlayStation 2 videogame Britney's Dance Beat, which is now available nationwide. The THQ-brand game capitalizes on the multimedia capabilities of the PlayStation 2 computer-entertainment system, placing Spears music videos in the background during game play, and featuring bonus DVD content that is unlocked as players progress through the game.

"It is so cool that I have my very own videogame," said Spears. "THQ totally captured my dance moves perfectly. I was blown away by how realistic everything looks!"

In Britney's Dance Beat, players audition to be a backup dancer on Spears's virtual concert tour by maneuvering one of six dancers (3 male and 3 female) through a series of 12 levels of auditions to perfect their dance moves and ultimately earn a spot onstage with Spears. Players gain points along the way for each correct move, and those that do well earn backstage passes that reveal never-before-seen clips, videos, concert footage, and more.

In addition, the game features some of Spears's biggest hits, including "Overprotected," "I'm A Slave 4 U," "...Baby One More Time," "Oops!...I Did it Again," and "Stronger." The game features both single and multiplayer options. Additional DVD content includes 360-degree immersive video in which the player controls the camera at a Spears concert, with the option of watching Spears and her dancers on stage, or focusing on cheering fans in the crowd.

The game is the first release for a next generation game system under THQ's worldwide exclusive agreement with Britney Brands Inc., a deal that grants THQ exclusive rights to publish Britney Spears games for PlayStation 2 through 2005. A PC version of Britney's Dance Beat will ship this June. For more information on Britney's Dance Beat or other THQ videogames, please visit THQ.com.

In related news, Spears's 2002 summer tour kicks off May 24 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
