NASHVILLE, TN. (Big & Rich Official Website) - Country duo Big & Rich's music video dedicated to the legacy of Vietnam War veteran Niles Harris and his experiences on November 8th, 1965 has been nominated for the Best Short Form
Music Video Grammy. Conceived to honor this day in history, the musical tribute - "8th of November" - produced and directed by Robert Deaton,
George Flanigan, and Marc Oswald, pays respect to Harris and the 173rd Airborne, many of whom lost their lives on that day.
Harris, credited with giving Big Kenny his signature top hat, met the duo back in 2003 and shared with them his stories of the war, particularly this day back in 1965 when the 173rd Airborne was ambushed. Big Kenny and John Rich chose to memorialize their friend's story through song and video, providing an outlet through which to communicate the depth of war. In further tribute, Big & Rich took Harris back to Vietnam, 40 years later, to the site that inspired the song, while creating a documentary of their experiences.
"The 8th of November is very special to us, since it's about purple-heart recipient Niles Harris, a true American hero who has become our friend," said John Rich. Added Big Kenny, "Through this song we were able to pay respect to Niles while also showing our admiration in a way that transcends any one particular war or soldier - honoring veterans of wars since and still to come."
Since the song's release in June 2006, Big & Rich have helped raise $30,000 for the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and over $500,000 for the 173rd Airborne Memorial in Georgia.
