Brentwood, TN. (Top40 Charts/ Sparrow Records) - Congratulations to multi-platinum San
Diego band Switchfoot. The surf-loving quintet rode in last week on a perfect wave of print media acclaim for its brand new album, OH! GRAVITY, and rocked the project's title track live on 'The Late Show with
David Letterman.' A headlining U.S. tour begins February 13.
Associated Press calls OH! GRAVITY 'an outstanding record in every sense ... Switchfoot seems to carry more substance and wit than most of their peers ... Frontman Jon Foreman doesn't like what he sees in the world today, but the music doesn't offer complaints so much as it tries to rise above such hollow pursuits as money and adulation with brains and humor ... The rhythm of bassist Tim Foreman and drummer Chad Butler is rock solid and Jerome Fontamillas (keyboards) and Andrew Shirley (guitars) round out one of the most upbeat, intelligent units you're likely to hear.'
USA Today points out the 'catchier-than-ever choruses' of OH! GRAVITY while The Tennessean declares Switchfoot 'has kicked out its legs impressively: 'Amateur Lovers' slashes like a ragged, punked-up Thin Lizzy rave-up; '4:12' hops with hand-clap power-pop zeal; the standout, creatively angular but still hummable title track howls; and 'Yesterdays' and 'Let Your Love Be Strong' float with affecting, spacey tenderness.'
The Trades says, 'Switchfoot has produced guitar-driven rock such as this in the past, but never with such vigorous urgency ... the music often features a punk back beat that makes you want to jump out of your seat ... When tunes settle down, things can get downright lovely. 'Yesterdays' is an achingly beautiful meditation on the death of a loved one, pointing to a future beyond the grave.'
CB Music points out that 'Heart is the key element that drives Switchfoot. It's rare that we find a prominent rock act that full of love and hope, rather than rage, depression and apathy.'
Up next, Switchfoot takes OH! GRAVITY on the road, headlining a tour that starts February 13. For a complete scoop on concert dates, plus even more new album and concert reviews, check here.
