NASHVILLE, TN. (Top40 Charts/ Curb Records) - Hank Williams, Jr. was honored at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame annual banquet at the Nashville Convention Center in mid-February. Unfortunately, Hank Jr. was unable to attend the event and sent a letter of acceptance and regret for his absence.
For 16 years, Hank Jr. has been recognized as 'Mr. Monday Night' and the voice of Monday Night Football with his award winning anthem, 'All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,' and the distinctive, 'Are you ready for some football?' His contribution to sports television's longest-running, most successful and comprehensive series has provided him with four Emmys and the TSHF distinction as Tennessean of the Year.
Eleven Tennessee athletic icons were honored at the ceremony, including: legendary former Tennessee State University football coach Joe Gilliam, Sr.; former NFL football player and Vanderbilt University alum Will Wolford; Knoxville's own University of Tennessee SEC football champion Kyle 'Buddy' Cruz; Former NFL defenseman and Tennessee Tech University alum Jim Youngblood; NBA all-star and former UT basketball star Bernard King; Jackson, Tenn. native and professional tennis athlete Fran Chandler; All-star coach and current Athletic Director of Union University David Blackstock; Memphis native, former professional baseball player and current TSHF Board of Directors member Al Brown; 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and veteran University of Memphis and Vanderbilt football coach Fred Pancoast.
Posthumously honored were Dr. Frank Trundle, team dentist of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and TSHF Board of Directors member and Cornelius Ridley, legendary five-time high school 'Coach of the Year' for Metro Nashville schools. Several additional individual and team honorees were also recognized at Friday's banquet.
Past Tennessean of the Year recipients include Conway Twitty, former Vice President Albert Gore, Jr., Peyton Manning and Vince Gill.
