LOS ANGELES (Shortlistofmusic Website) - Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Beck, India.Arie, and
Iggy Pop are among the 12 recording artists who will serve as judges, er, "listmakers," for the second annual Shortlist
Music Project.
The project culminates in awarding one artist the Shortlist Music Prize at an awards ceremony and concert on Oct. 29 at the Knitting Factory in L.A. Last year's winner was Sigur Ros. The award goes to creative and adventurous albums from emerging artists, instead of established hitmakers.
Metallica's Lars Ulrich, Blur's Damon Albarn, Beck, the Neptunes, and the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi are among the judges for the 2002 Shortlist Music Prize, which spotlights lesser-known acts for their artistic merit.
Icelandic art rockers Sigur Ros were awarded the first winner of the Shortlist Music Prize last year, besting a field that included the Dandy Warhols, P.J. Harvey, Ryan Adams, Gorillaz, Air, Bilal, Jay Dee, Nikka Costa, and Kweli.
The complete list of judges for 2002 are:
- Artists: Damon Albarn (Blur), India.Arie, Beck, Mos Def, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Albert Hammond Jr and Nick Valensi (the Strokes), Paul Oakenfold, Iggy Pop, Jill Scott, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (the Roots), and Lars Ulrich (Metallica)
- Producers: the Neptunes, Dan "The Automator" Nakamura (Gorillaz), and Gustavo Santaolalla (Cafe Tacuba)
- Film directors: Baz Luhrmann and Spike Jonze
- Journliasts: Evelyn McDonnell and Frank Williams
- DJ: Nic Harcourt (Los Angeles' KCRW).
Each panelist will choose their 10 favorite albums, which will be whittled down to a single list of 10 and announced on Sept. 16.
The final winner will be announced at the Knitting Factory event.
